Frequently Asked Questions

Group Classes

How long are group classes?

Group classes are two hours long, within one day. For example, Level 3 is offered from 7pm to 9pm EST on Mondays. Courses run for 12 weeks, with breaks only for Thanksgiving (US only), Easter, and Christmas.

Are there any breaks for holidays?

Yes. There are no lessons over Thanksgiving week (US date), the week of Christmas, the week of New Years, and the week of Easter. Although French with Madeleine is based in the United States, many students come from various other countries. To keep courses at 12 weeks, we unfortunately cannot accommodate all holidays throughout the year. If you must miss a class, please view our makeup policy or contact Madeleine.

How many students are in a group class?

Each course has 4 to 8 students. Classes are kept small and you will see the same students every week to build familiarity with each other and confidence in using the language. You will be able to set up group messages or exchange emails in order to connect with speaking partners from your class.

What happens if there are less than 4 students in a group class?

In order to maintain a high level of effectiveness and liveliness, group classes with enrollment at less than four students will be either cancelled or postponed. Students from these classes may also have the option of moving to another class at the same level.

How do I know what my level is?

You may take the self-assessment via Google Forms. Click on Group Classes from the French with Madeleine website, then choose the Evaluation page in the drop-down menu. You may also request a phone interview with me in lieu of or in addition to the self-assessment. To do so, send a text message to +1 (240) 495-2157 on WhatsApp or standard messaging.

How long does it take to get to the next level in French?

To progress through the levels of the French with Madeleine curriculum, each course takes 12 weeks. The courses are designed to build on each other so that by the end of one course, you are well-prepared to sign up for the next level. To progress through the levels as defined by the Common European Framework of Reference for Language (CEFR), this is a little more complicated. Levels range from A0 to C2, and include assessments for all four axes of language: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. To reach a higher level, all four skills need to meet that level's requirements. This is quite hard to do after level A2. Most students reach a sort of plateau at B1, then again at B2, and many of us never get past a level C1 without immersion. There is no set length of time to move from a B1 to a B2, or from a B2 to a C1. French with Madeleine offers an approximate equivalent to the CEFR levels (see the Overview of Group Classes to view the estimates). However, these are merely a rough value of the levels you will achieve through the French with Madeleine curriculum. It takes years to reach a solid C1 level, and extensive and intensive experience to reach a full C2 in all four skills. For a more in-depth explanation, email Madeleine at
